One of the clients I have had under my watch for the past 6 months recently had a case of mistaken identity online. Unfortunately, a customer of their next door neighbor had mistaken them as the lube service next door.
The majority of those of us who use the internet are most familiar with Google for our search engine needs. When we search for a car wash, an car maintenance service, or a sandwich shop, we have learned to add a location to our search as well. Adding location, such as “Decatur, GA” to the search helps us drive more specific results. This is an amazing feature that we have come to love to provide us with the best, local search results possible (according to Google.)
When a client of the next door car maintenance shop thought that the car wash was all under one roof, the unhappy client had mistakenly left a bad rating on Google Place Page Reviews for the car wash. As most of you know, we base many of our decisions upon peer reviews (whether we know them personally or not.) The reviews of others makes a difference in our decision process. The review left by the unhappy customer was potentially damaging to future business of the car wash, which had nothing to do with the poor service the customer had received at the lube shop.
One of the advantages of having a web operative run your digital marketing is that their eyes, ears, and fingertips are always looking out for your small business. After all, the small business owner has much more to worry about than their digital presence, nor do they usually know how to handle it.
Here is an example of why small businesses need a web operative managing their presence on the internet:
As a small business owner, you have one of three decisions to make:
- You can ignore what is being said about you on the internet (whether you like it or not, people are talking about you.)
- You can try to manage your web presence on your own, all the while trying to run the day to day operations of your business.
- You can embrace the fact that the ever changing landscape of the internet requires an expert, watching your back and your best interest, by outsourcing these expert skills through a web operative.
So… Who is watching your back while people talk about you on the internet?
